Champions League: Barcelona beats Juventus 3:0

Barcelona's Lionel Messi celebrates scoring his side's first goal during a Champions League group D soccer match between FC Barcelona and Juventus at the Camp Nou stadium in Barcelona, Spain on Tuesday.

Barcelona president Josep Maria Bartomeu hailed Lionel Messi as the best player of all-time as the Argentine lifted the mood at the crisis-ridden Catalan giants with a double in a 3-0 thrashing of Juventus to start their Champions League campaign.

"I have the feeling that when Leo gets the ball, something is going to happen, anything".

Buffon was then called into action to deny a free kick from Messi before Suarez almost got in on the act with a near-post effort that rose narrowly over the crossbar.

Pardo scored twice for the Greeks in the 89th minute and 90th minute but was little to late to change the course of the match.

The Juve clash, a repeat of last season's quarter-final tie won by the Italians and the 2015 Champions League final in which Barca triumphed, was one of the most eagerly anticipated fixtures in Europe this week.

"I have suffered many times playing against Messi and now I have the luck to have him on my side", said Valverde.

Barca captain Iniesta, 33, struggled for large parts of last season as injuries took their toll but he rolled back the years against Juve with a seamless display that recalled the days when Pep Guardiola was manager and Barca dominated in midfield.

The third goal was again all Messi as he received the ball on the counter-attack, quickly sidestepped two challenges before firing a shot across a helpless Buffon to find the back of the net. Though, the team has much enough strength to face any top teams in the football world.

"The first was rather unexpected, while for the second, we had greater hopes of really winning it. It's to Ernesto Valverde's credit". That made it eight goals for Messi for the season, seven in his last three games after his hat trick at the weekend against Espanyol.

Messi has also led Barca to a perfect start in La Liga after three games, to open up an early four-point lead over rivals Real Madrid.
