Newspaper: Bottas holds off Vettel in Austrian cliffhanger

Motorsports: F1 driver Lewis Hamilton gets apology, but still wants justice

"At the beginning I could control the race but it was trickier towards the end".

Mercedes driver Lewis Hamilton was fastest in the second practice session at the Austrian Grand Prix, ahead of title rival Sebastian Vettel's Ferrari.

Vettel slotted into second with his first attempt, 0.023s adrift, but looked set to go quickest after setting the fastest two sector times.

Ominously McLaren's Fernando Alonso, who'd switched back to a Spec 2 Honda engine and been 13th overall, reported that he had "no more power". "I enjoyed it and the car was getting better and better..."

Knowing he would take the grid penalty, Hamilton made it through to the final part of qualifying using the supersoft tire, meaning he will start on a different tire compound compared to the rest of the top 10 on ultrasofts.

Bottas, who led from pole, was cleared of making a jump start in a stewards' investigation and took the chequered flag just ahead of German Vettel.

The 32-year-old Briton won the 2014 British Grand Prix from sixth on the grid and finished a stirring second behind then Mercedes team-mate Nico Rosberg at the Red Bull Ring after starting ninth.

Lewis Hamilton insists he does not need to change anything in his approach despite heading to Silverstone on the back of another average result at the Austrian Grand Prix.

Bottas also went into the gravel at much the same place as Alonso early into the afternoon's session, having spun his car twice in the morning.

"I think a lot of teams tonight will be looking at their options for Sunday and probably not thinking it's a clear one stop with an ultrasoft and a supersoft anymore", Ricciardo noted. "The car came alive and I had really good pace", Vettel said.

Daniil Kvyat was the other driver to drop out in 14th place, with a gap of 0.3s on a track as short as the Red Bull Ring enough to leave him five places lower than teammate Sainz in Q2. The two Saubers of Marcus Ericsson and Pascal Wehrlein were slowest overall, while Magnussen's session also came to an end in Q1 due to his failure despite him progressing to the second part of qualifying. I had a massive blister in the rear left [tyre].

"Since the day I signed with Mercedes, what else can you put as a target?"

Bottas got off to a fast start and was investigated by stewards - but cleared - for possibly jumping the lights. But I want to win this championship.

He told Sky Sports: "You'd expect Lewis to be able to say it's done and he's satisfied Sebastian has apologised". Instead, the team suffered a double elimination just one race after Stroll claimed the team's first podium of the season.
